Number 52 : Heaven 23

Finally after a year of (mostly) fine dining I have reached my fifty-second restaurant and when it came to the view (and the company) this restaurant could not be beat. Situated on the top floor of the Gothia Towers the view over the city of Gothenburg was worth the experience alone.

The restaurant was luxurious and modern. The staff were very attentive all evening and maintained good service. The menu was not so expansive and there was only one vegetarian dish, however what I received was very nice and well presented.
The food seemed to exist of fresh and seasonal products and was also adapted upon request.

A good selection of wine and drinks was also on offer, I would certainly add this place to the "to do" list of places to eat in the city, as I said if not for the view but also for the food.

Number 51 : Barabicu

This place has long been on my list of places to go to but each time I passed by in the summer it had always been packed. Location wise it sits perfectly between Linné and the city centre so it is an ideal meeting place for people that live or work between the two areas.

The food tasted very nice and the presentation was good. The menu is influenced from North and South America and offers a good variation. Despite being busy the service still managed to be attentive and professional. The choice of food consisted mainly of lots of meat and fish dishes bit there was also vegetarian options available was well.

The interior was fresh and lively. The atmosphere busy and active. I can see why this place is fast becoming a popular After Work venue. Be sure to check out the cocktails as well if you are passing by.

Number 50 : Cuckoo's Nest

Still within the Göteborg region I ventured over the river and ended up on Hissinge and at Cuckoo's Nest, the restaurant to the Radisson Blu hotel.

The food was extremely well presented, although in some respects I found it quite plain. The menu looked adventurous and offered good contrast but I just felt that the meals were very basic in their substance. Another down side was that it took a long time for the food to arrive.

The restaurant / eating area was certainly fresh and modern. With Chalmers next door the whole environment is built with a science theme in mind which made for a unique talking point. Another plus side was that the staff were friendly and accommodating.

Number 49 : Miss Sophie

If I had of magically appeared inside Miss Sophie without having walked in off the street then I never would have guessed where I was. I loved the design of this place, it had the feel of a country club from the 1930's and at the same time was very relaxed and casually exclusive.

The food was extremely good and freshly prepared. Most of the food is grilled over a fire and then presented eye-catchingly on a plate. The menu consisted of just meat dishes although vegetarian was available on request. The wine list and cocktail list was very well stocked and the evening on the food and drink front certainly did not disappoint.

The service was polite and professional but on the downside was very slow and the staff almost seemed overworked. It took a long time to take our orders and a few things were forgotten along the way. That aside though a very pleasant experience.

Number 48 : Amazing Thai

Sad to say but Amazing Thai did not in my opinion live up to its name. Having said that though the interior was probably one of the nicest Thai restaurants I have been to. Wooden carvings and authentic Thai decorations made it a nice environment to dine in.

The food I thought was very ordinary and did nothing to excite me. The service was ok but not exceptional.

Number 47 : Athena

As I sat back in my chair with the Greek beer gently flowing through my body I gazed intensely at the mural on the wall.  Looking out at the sea, for a moment I almost could have been in The Mediterranean...

I enjoyed my evening at Athena. The service was really friendly and I though the food was nice as well. You can choose from traditional Greek dishes or a mixture of Greek / Spanish tapas dishes. One small complaint would be that the portion size wasn't so big but this just gave me an excuse to eat a dessert.

The restaurant was spacious and had a number of different rooms you could sit in. It was decorated to give that Greek style... Greek goddesses and vines on the walls added to the appeal. A pleasant evening, it is always nice to try somewhere a bit different.

Number 46 : Angelo's

Gothenburg certainly has a wide range of Italian restaurants to choose from. Angelo's, situated on Sten Sturegatan, offers a spacious restaurant with a nice enclosed glass room at the front.

The food I thought was good and was slightly different to what I normally have found at Italian restaurants before.  The service was friendly and attentive. The food was presented artistically and I enjoyed my meal enough to be tempted to have a dessert as well.

The restaurant itself was ok, not that it gave you that "I could be in Italy" feeling but it was certainly clean and fresh.  Sadly I was the only person in the restaurant. It is always hard to know what this depends upon (20.00 on a tuesday evening could be one reason) but I certainly could not see anything negative about this place.

Number 45 : Mr.P

Situated in the lower part of Gothenburg's Museum of Art at the end of Avenyn it could be very easy to miss Mr.P. To do so however would be a shame as it is a restaurant that offers many things and is more than worth a visit.

As expected for its location, Mr.P has a stylish design about it. It was quite interesting just to sit down at the dinner table and glance around at all the different paintings adorning the walls. The service was extremely welcoming and friendly. I was treated more like an old friend rather that like someone who was cautiously entering the restaurant for the first time.

The menu comprises of dishes of different sizes (little, medium and large). You can combine a small and a medium, or two mediums etc... or just go for a large. The food was very nicely set out and I really enjoyed it. It was all freshly cooked and had a nice taste. All in all a very cosy evening and one that will stick long in the mind. Eating out should be a positive and memorable experience, Mr.P offers this.

Number 44 : Brasserie Lipp

Time to test another of the lunch venues on Avenyn and on this sunny September day the destination was Brasserie Lipp. A very well kept restaurant with a cheap set lunch that provides relatively good value for money.

The food was nice. The salad bar selection was well done although as the restaurant filled up quite a large queue emerged in front of it. The main course tasted well although was a little on the small side (it is worth filling up with bread and salad). A glance at the evening menu showed that this restaurant had a good blend of Swedish and European dishes. Certainly an OK place to stop off at if you are venturing down Avenyn.

Number 43 : Norda Bar & Grill på Clarion Hotel Post

To visit any restaurant on a rainy Monday night and have to wait 30 minutes to get a table is as good a sign of popularity as any. Norda Bar & Grill is situated on the first floor of the Clarion Hotel Post and the restaurant has kept a lot of the style and design of the old building it is housed in. A lot of money has clearly been spent on the furnishing and for that alone it is worth paying this place a visit.

The food was extremely good. Everything is cooked to order and I loved how the food was individually presented. The menu was quite select (only one vegetarian dish) but at the same time it was still diverse and well thought out. I chose a macaroni cheese which I have to say was the best and most exclusive macaroni and cheese I have ever tasted.
An extremely nice and relaxed evening, definitely a place to try if you are in Göteborg and looking for somewhere a little bit more exclusive.

If you are looking for a quite meal then you should probably go elsewhere. As the name suggests, Hard Rock Cafe is a place with a lively atmosphere and constant music. Not that I am really a fan of Hard Rock but to my surprise I liked this place. The decoration was fun and inventive, the service was friendly and the food tasted good.

Being the end of the week I decided to be a bit unhealthy and went for burger and chips with extra onion rings on the side. It all tasted good and everything was well cooked. The menu had a good selection of dishes and there also was an impressive cocktail and drinks range as well.

The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was extremely relaxed. There were many families eating and I imagine that this can be a fun place to take children.

Number 41 : Kometen

This restaurant is easily recognisable by the life-sized picture of Leif Mannerström stuck on the window. Not that I am a big fan of reality TV, but anyone living in Sweden the last few years would be familiar with this recognisable figure from the programme Mästerkock. Having seen some of the criticism he gives out on TV then surely his own restaurant must be of a good standard?
With my parents in tow we ended up at Kometen.

The food was luxurious and all very well cooked. There was no vegetarian dish on the menu but I was told that something could be prepared from the kitchen. It is always a bit of a gamble when that happens and I guess it comes down to what ingredients are available in the fridge and the creativty of the chef in the kitchen. In reality this isn't really a place you would come to for vegetables and a healthy meal. The menu consisted mainly of meat and sauces and although not to my tasting everything did look very well presented and appetising. I enjoyed my vegetarian creation in any case.

The service was very friendly and the restaurant was well kept in the style that befitted somewhere that has been a Göteborg favourite since the 1930's.

Number 40 : Bombay Palace

I like restaurants where you are able to diverge from the menu and ask for food to be made to your liking... Bombay Palace is such a place. Looking in to the kitchen you can see that all the food is freshly prepared to order and I was certainly not left disappointed upon tasting it. You can often tell by looking around what people think of the food and there were a number of people at other tables that were also complimenting as to how well it tasted.

The portion sizes were massive. I can normally eat a lot but on this occasion I was struggling. The food was well flavoured and nicely presented and I definitely got value for my money.  I have mentioned before that a complaint I can sometimes have with Indian food is when it is too dry, but at this restaurant each dish was cooked to perfection and tasted divine. The restaurant had a nice Indian style to it and the staff were very friendly and talkative. Easily the best Indian restaurant I have tried so far in Göteborg.

Number 39 : Kungstorget

One of the things that attracted me to this restaurant was the decoration. The chairs, tables and wall furnishings are all elaborately done out and it has a grand style that makes it feel pleasantly exclusive. This old style is then juxtaposed with the fact that your menu is on an iPad. Don't let the technology scare you though... By having the menu on an iPad this means that the menu can be changed and updated as needed. There is nothing worse that ordering a dish on a paper menu only to find out that it ran a few hours earlier.

The food at Kungstorget was very well presented and the restaurant served a good selection of Swedish dishes with ingredients from different parts of the country. I went for the cheese board and it left me feeling very full up. I loved the jam that came with it and the 3 cheeses selected complemented each other exquisitely with different strengths and tastes. The waitresses were all very professional and my food was explained in detail. Worth dropping in if you are passing by, a restaurant with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Number 38 : Hello Monkey

Another popular place to eat in Gothenburg. Hello Monkey is a restaurant that often appears in the "places to go to" section when you read articles about the city. Hello Monkey serves a mixture of Asian food from across the continent and is very different from any other restaurant I have tried that offers similar.

I really liked the interior decoration and it gave a relaxed and family feel to the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and were happy to talk about the menu and to give recommendations. The atmosphere was laid back social and I felt most comfortable and at home.

A glass of Pimms... very nice.
The food itself I absolutely loved and it was nicely set out with a good blend of exciting tastes. Even after I had finished eating and was extremely full up, I still wanted to have more. I think this restaurant is well worth a visit if you are looking for a nice evening out and something a little bit different.

Number 37 : Mañana

Slowly but surely I am becoming a fan of Tapas. I have come to learn though that there is good Tapas and that there is not so good Tapas. Good Tapas is fresh and tastes delicious... not so good Tapas is the type that you buy frozen in a supermarket and heat in an oven for 20 minutes.. sadly a favourite in some restaurants. I'm pleased to say though that Mañana was a fine example of good Tapas.

Mañana was busy, even for a Sunday night. It seems to be a real favourite amongst Gothenburg citizens, and rightly so. I have tried to come here a number of times before but it has always been booked up in advance.

The food tasted very nice and was well presented and at the same time the service was attentive and polite. The restaurant was modern and spacious and the bar served a good array of cocktails.  The menu was easy to choose from and the vegetarian, fish and meat dishes were all clearly separated which made my task of choosing food a lot easier.
A very enjoyable evening, eating out on a Sunday evening is definitely underrated.

Number 36: Wrapped

Newly opened just a few weeks ago, Wrapped is fast food place with a difference. It is fast in the respect that your food is put together in front of you in a matter of minutes but not in the respect that many of the ingredients and fillings on display have been made by hand that very day (so in reality there is a lot of preparation behind each meal).

The menu was very self explanatory. You choose a dish, add a base, add a filing and then choose a topping. It was easy to understand and the staff were very enthusiastic and happy to talk about what they were doing and the ingredients they were using. It all seemed very healthy and fresh and once I had stopped looking for a knife and fork (its all finger food) I really enjoyed it.

The restaurant was very small and situated in a basement. It was actually quite cosy and they have tried to make it a feature. It is not a place you would sit for hours and hours, it is essentially street food... you eat and then you leave. The food was very good and well priced and I have a feeling that this place will become very popular.

On most occasions when I have gone past this restaurant I have wanted to go in and eat but it has always seemed busy. On this occasion though I was in luck and having been recommended to eat here by a friend I was quite looking forward to check it out.

The restaurant was small but very cosy and was very fresh and modern. The atmosphere was young and lively and the staff were welcoming and attentive. Not the kind of place you would go to for a quiet meal, but certainly a place you would go to for something good to eat with friends.

The menu was varied and offered a good selection. I was highly impressed by the food and it not only tasted good but was also neatly presented. I went for garlic bread and vegetarian pasta dish and it is definitely something that I would have again.

It isn't often that I venture out for lunch, but walking down Avenyn at midday presents you with many options to eat out. I ended up at Bryggeriet, the lunch menu looked simple and easy and offered a good choice for a reasonable price. The salad bar was fresh and I was actually quite impressed with the food I received.

It was very pleasant to sit outside in the covered outdoor section and the service was attentive and polite. I even had a look around inside and the restaurant was quite rustic and cosy. I ordered the lasagne... it tasted fresh although I was still quite hungry after I had eaten it. Next time I will stock up on more bread and salad to begin with. For the price I payed though, I shouldn't really complain. There are not many places around where you can eat lunch in the middle of city for under 100kr and still feel that you are somewhere a bit more luxurious.

Number 33 : Bitter

Bitter by name but certainly not bitter by nature. The food here was very nice. I chose a pizza and it was made just the way I like it. A nice crisp crust and lots of fresh ingredients on top.

I like the idea of Gastro Pubs and sometimes you can get some really nice dishes in a unique and unusual setting. Although the food was nice the menu I thought was quite limited. I would have preferred to see a bit of a wider selection and many of the dishes seemed similar to each other. The cocktail selection made up for it though and they were reasonably priced.

The design had a 60's touch to it and was neatly done. The outside seating was very pleasant and on a windy evening was protected and provided a nice eating area. The service was friendly and efficient.

Number 32 : Palace

Most visitors to Gothenburg have at one stage or another walked past Palace on their way through the city. Situated on one of the bridges over the water this restaurant is in a prime location. The restaurant was closed up until recently for renovation and having never been in before I thought it was high time to see what it had to offer.

The main attraction is the large sun-lounge on the front of the building. On a hot Gothenburg day it was quite pleasant to sit in the shade with a cool breeze running through, as the city life strolled by outside. The service was of a very high standard and the restaurant both inside and outside is quite exceptionally well designed. Sitting there it was very easy to drift back in time a hundred years.

The menu was select but it offered a nice selection of dishes. I went for the truffle risotto and it was very well done and nicely presented.
My only negative (and this is no fault of the restaurant) was that as I sat and ate my meal a few meters on the bridge were 2 buskers trying to out do each other, one with a drum and one with a recorder. Both of them played the same "tune" non stop for the whole duration of my meal. In this respect before you take your seat just have a quick listen to what music can be heard around you, maybe you like it, maybe you don't.

I was pleasantly surprised by Toro Blanco. Situated at Kungstorget I thought maybe this place would be a cheap tourist trap but this was not at all the case. The restaurant was fresh and nicely designed and you are able to get good authentic food for quite a reasonable price.

I have learned with Tapas that sometimes it can be good to go for the chef's selection. For the amateur such as myself, when it comes to Spanish food trying to put a selection of dishes together that will complement each other is always a bit hit and miss. In this respect I find it best to put my trust in the hands of experts and also give advice about things you do and don't like.

I went for the vegetarian selection and was not disappointed. The food tasted good, was nicely presented and the service very friendly. Good value for money.

Number 30 : Targaz Bar & BBQ

This restaurant is next door to my gym and up until now I have avoided the temptation to go inside and eat. On this day though my resistance was finally broken. With the temperature hitting 25.c some food from the Middle East was too tempting to resist.

Greek and Persian food is what is offered at Targaz Bar & BBQ and there was a good mixture of specials and set meals to choose from. I chose a selection of vegetarian dishes and I found the food very appetising and fresh. The restaurant was quite nicely done out and large opening windows made it very cool even when sitting inside. The restaurant seemed to be a mixture of Middle Eastern expats and tourists which gave it quite a social atmosphere.

The food came quickly although the service was a bit casual. Young waiters and waitresses who gave the impression that their main priority was to have fun with each other rather than seeing to their guests, although having said that the waiter who served me was polite.

Number 29 : Qué Pasa

For some reason I normally try and avoid Spanish food. Although for the most I am of a generous nature, when it comes to food I've never been so enthusiastic about sharing it if it is something I have specifically ordered for myself. Being vegetarian and when going out with three meat eating friends, each of us orders 4 or 5 Tapas dishes each.  My friends would then take great delight in picking and sampling from my vegetarian selection where as I am unable to eat any of their meat dishes...

Que Pasa was a spacious yet quaint restaurant in the middle of the city. There where a number of different rooms and outdoor areas to sit in, each offering a different style and ambience. Stone floors and candlelight gave it a rustic charm and it was quite a cosy and peaceful place to spend a Saturday night.

The food was delicious and nicely presented. With tapas the ability to choose and mix your own dishes means you can combine many tastes to great effect. The service was friendly although my waitress did not know much about the food I was ordering when asked (but I half suspect she was new to the job).

I would have to say that Que Pasa  is definitely worth a visit though and I may have been tempted to try more Spanish food in the near future.

I have often walked past this restaurant on Drottninggatan and this evening I decided to give it a try. I have visited quite a few Thai restaurants now in the past 7 months and in all honesty I am afraid to say that this one did not especially stand out.

I thought the decoration inside was nice. Very high ceilings gave the restaurant a grandeur and the setting felt "Thai" to some extent. The service was friendly with a smile and the food came promptly... although unusually for a Friday night there was not so many people dining, so I wouldn't have expected to wait long in any case.

The menu I thought was quite varied, although the food I tried was quite average and lacked taste. I did have a nice coconut juice juice to drink though which I enjoyed. A redeeming factor was that the food was quite cheap in general and I managed to have a starter, main course and a drink all for 130kr.

Number 27 : Rustik Bistro

Classed as a European Bistro, Rustik is a pleasant bar/restaurant on Linnegatan.  The decor inside was stylish and uncluttered and even the wooden tables were branded with the restaurants logo. It is obvious that a lot of thought and planning had gone in to how this restaurant should look and it didn't disappoint.

The menu was fresh and varied and the food I ordered was well presented and full of taste. The menu also boasted a wide selection of beers and wines. One side of the restaurant is also a bar area so it is possible to sit down for a pre-drink first before being seated for your meal. This helped to contribute to a relaxed atmosphere, even though Rustik is probably a more exclusive place to eat than many of the other establishments I have tried. The service was efficient and polite and the food came in good time.

All in all a very enjoyable meal. A perfect place to go if you are looking for that something extra in a small and cosy setting.

Number 26 : Trattoria Da Pasquale

In this day and age you can find a pizzeria on nearly every street corner. The quality however  ranges from good to bad and the means of making them differ widely. Trattoria Da Pasquale provides genuine Italian food in an authentic environment with a focus on speciality pizzas. Recommend to me by a friend, I thought that I would give it a try.

The pizza was good and came brimming with lots of fresh ingredients on top. My biggest complaint I normally have when I eat pizza is that the dough can be wet but here I had no such problems. I sat outside on a lovely veranda surrounded by flowers and sipped wine in the sunshine. The inside of the restaurant reminded me of one of those Italian-American restaurants you see in gangster films and it seemed simple and cosy. An Italian TV channel broadcasting in the background gave it that extra touch...

The menu offered a range of Italian dishes. The price was ok although the starters and deserts seemed a bit pricey. The service was efficient and fast. If you are looking for a good pizza and and also want to spend a few hours eating and drinking (rather than the rushed pace of many pizza places) then I can recommend coming here.

Number 25 : Berzelius bar & matsal

This is a place I have passed by many times on my way towards Liseberg. I have always been attracted by the outdoor serving area and many an afternoon I have gone by to see people casually drinking and eating in the sun after a long day at work.

Upon visiting I was very impressed. Both the outdoor and the indoor eating areas were very elaborately done and it was clear that a lot of attention was put down even to the smallest of details. The waiters and waitresses were all dressed smartly and acted accordingly. I found I received a very good and professional dining experience for a very reasonable price.

The food served was a blend of different Swedish traditional dishes with a strong input from the Gothenburg region. There was also a Tapas section as well. The menu was varied but also not excessive meaning it was easy to find something you like without getting lost in pages of different choices. I went for a vegetarian lasagne and was more than impressed.

The clientele tended to be towards the older generation. This is the kind of place I would be more than happy to bring my parents looking for an authentic taste of Swedish cuisine, or even business associates. At the same time though it was also very relaxed and friendly, all in all a nice mix.

Number 24 : Kinesiska Muren

Sweden's oldest Chinese restaurant, situated by the water in a building that probably once stood proudly overlooking the sea greeting the boats as they arrive in to Göteborg.  Now the building stands alone surrounded by car-parks, a fading glory from Göteborg's past.

The restaurant was authentically decorated and would have been very nice apart from one thing which really detracted from the experience.... this being green and white tablecloths with a big piece of see-through plastic on top. No doubt the plastic cover makes for easier cleaning but sadly it made me feel like I was eating in a preschool.

The menu was extremely large and in all honesty there was too many things to choose from. I could have spent a long time going through the different dishes. It is nice to have choice but sometimes too much can be a bad thing. The food itself was bland and didn't have much taste. The service was polite but nothing special and in the time I was there I was waited by 3 different people and probably exchanged about 2 sentences with each of them.

This restaurant I feel could have a lot of potential, sadly I left disappointed though.

Number 23 : Berså Burger Joint

Although Berså has been around for a while, the Burger Joint is newly opened this summer and promises real American burgers and tastes. The cities first real American hamburger place...

With all the hype and the talk I was expecting something quite special. What I received though I found to be very average. I found the burger to be quite soggy (wet) and it broke to bits in my hand when I tried to hold it meaning that I had to end up eating it with a knife and fork. The chips were undercooked in placed and aside from that there wasn't really much else in my little basket aside from a tub of dressing.

The service was laid back and friendly which is always a plus. The restaurant itself was in the covered outdoor area of what is normally a night club, and although it was nice sitting "al fresco" it did feel exactly as it was... tables and chairs set out temporarily on a dance floor.
