Number 46 : Angelo's

Gothenburg certainly has a wide range of Italian restaurants to choose from. Angelo's, situated on Sten Sturegatan, offers a spacious restaurant with a nice enclosed glass room at the front.

The food I thought was good and was slightly different to what I normally have found at Italian restaurants before.  The service was friendly and attentive. The food was presented artistically and I enjoyed my meal enough to be tempted to have a dessert as well.

The restaurant itself was ok, not that it gave you that "I could be in Italy" feeling but it was certainly clean and fresh.  Sadly I was the only person in the restaurant. It is always hard to know what this depends upon (20.00 on a tuesday evening could be one reason) but I certainly could not see anything negative about this place.

Number 45 : Mr.P

Situated in the lower part of Gothenburg's Museum of Art at the end of Avenyn it could be very easy to miss Mr.P. To do so however would be a shame as it is a restaurant that offers many things and is more than worth a visit.

As expected for its location, Mr.P has a stylish design about it. It was quite interesting just to sit down at the dinner table and glance around at all the different paintings adorning the walls. The service was extremely welcoming and friendly. I was treated more like an old friend rather that like someone who was cautiously entering the restaurant for the first time.

The menu comprises of dishes of different sizes (little, medium and large). You can combine a small and a medium, or two mediums etc... or just go for a large. The food was very nicely set out and I really enjoyed it. It was all freshly cooked and had a nice taste. All in all a very cosy evening and one that will stick long in the mind. Eating out should be a positive and memorable experience, Mr.P offers this.

Number 44 : Brasserie Lipp

Time to test another of the lunch venues on Avenyn and on this sunny September day the destination was Brasserie Lipp. A very well kept restaurant with a cheap set lunch that provides relatively good value for money.

The food was nice. The salad bar selection was well done although as the restaurant filled up quite a large queue emerged in front of it. The main course tasted well although was a little on the small side (it is worth filling up with bread and salad). A glance at the evening menu showed that this restaurant had a good blend of Swedish and European dishes. Certainly an OK place to stop off at if you are venturing down Avenyn.

Number 43 : Norda Bar & Grill på Clarion Hotel Post

To visit any restaurant on a rainy Monday night and have to wait 30 minutes to get a table is as good a sign of popularity as any. Norda Bar & Grill is situated on the first floor of the Clarion Hotel Post and the restaurant has kept a lot of the style and design of the old building it is housed in. A lot of money has clearly been spent on the furnishing and for that alone it is worth paying this place a visit.

The food was extremely good. Everything is cooked to order and I loved how the food was individually presented. The menu was quite select (only one vegetarian dish) but at the same time it was still diverse and well thought out. I chose a macaroni cheese which I have to say was the best and most exclusive macaroni and cheese I have ever tasted.
An extremely nice and relaxed evening, definitely a place to try if you are in Göteborg and looking for somewhere a little bit more exclusive.

Number 42 : Hard Rock Cafe

If you are looking for a quite meal then you should probably go elsewhere. As the name suggests, Hard Rock Cafe is a place with a lively atmosphere and constant music. Not that I am really a fan of Hard Rock but to my surprise I liked this place. The decoration was fun and inventive, the service was friendly and the food tasted good.

Being the end of the week I decided to be a bit unhealthy and went for burger and chips with extra onion rings on the side. It all tasted good and everything was well cooked. The menu had a good selection of dishes and there also was an impressive cocktail and drinks range as well.

The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was extremely relaxed. There were many families eating and I imagine that this can be a fun place to take children.

Number 41 : Kometen

This restaurant is easily recognisable by the life-sized picture of Leif Mannerström stuck on the window. Not that I am a big fan of reality TV, but anyone living in Sweden the last few years would be familiar with this recognisable figure from the programme Mästerkock. Having seen some of the criticism he gives out on TV then surely his own restaurant must be of a good standard?
With my parents in tow we ended up at Kometen.

The food was luxurious and all very well cooked. There was no vegetarian dish on the menu but I was told that something could be prepared from the kitchen. It is always a bit of a gamble when that happens and I guess it comes down to what ingredients are available in the fridge and the creativty of the chef in the kitchen. In reality this isn't really a place you would come to for vegetables and a healthy meal. The menu consisted mainly of meat and sauces and although not to my tasting everything did look very well presented and appetising. I enjoyed my vegetarian creation in any case.

The service was very friendly and the restaurant was well kept in the style that befitted somewhere that has been a Göteborg favourite since the 1930's.

Would I go back here? As a vegetarian, no.  It was quite a cosy place to eat out though so is definitely a place I could visit again with meat-eating guests.

Number 40 : Bombay Palace

I like restaurants where you are able to diverge from the menu and ask for food to be made to your liking... Bombay Palace is such a place. Looking in to the kitchen you can see that all the food is freshly prepared to order and I was certainly not left disappointed upon tasting it. You can often tell by looking around what people think of the food and there were a number of people at other tables that were also complimenting as to how well it tasted.

The portion sizes were massive. I can normally eat a lot but on this occasion I was struggling. The food was well flavoured and nicely presented and I definitely got value for my money.  I have mentioned before that a complaint I can sometimes have with Indian food is when it is too dry, but at this restaurant each dish was cooked to perfection and tasted divine. The restaurant had a nice Indian style to it and the staff were very friendly and talkative. Easily the best Indian restaurant I have tried so far in Göteborg.

Number 39 : Kungstorget

One of the things that attracted me to this restaurant was the decoration. The chairs, tables and wall furnishings are all elaborately done out and it has a grand style that makes it feel pleasantly exclusive. This old style is then juxtaposed with the fact that your menu is on an iPad. Don't let the technology scare you though... By having the menu on an iPad this means that the menu can be changed and updated as needed. There is nothing worse that ordering a dish on a paper menu only to find out that it ran a few hours earlier.

The food at Kungstorget was very well presented and the restaurant served a good selection of Swedish dishes with ingredients from different parts of the country. I went for the cheese board and it left me feeling very full up. I loved the jam that came with it and the 3 cheeses selected complemented each other exquisitely with different strengths and tastes. The waitresses were all very professional and my food was explained in detail. Worth dropping in if you are passing by, a restaurant with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Number 38 : Hello Monkey

Another popular place to eat in Gothenburg. Hello Monkey is a restaurant that often appears in the "places to go to" section when you read articles about the city. Hello Monkey serves a mixture of Asian food from across the continent and is very different from any other restaurant I have tried that offers similar.

I really liked the interior decoration and it gave a relaxed and family feel to the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and were happy to talk about the menu and to give recommendations. The atmosphere was laid back social and I felt most comfortable and at home.

A glass of Pimms... very nice.
The food itself I absolutely loved and it was nicely set out with a good blend of exciting tastes. Even after I had finished eating and was extremely full up, I still wanted to have more. I think this restaurant is well worth a visit if you are looking for a nice evening out and something a little bit different.

Number 37 : Mañana

Slowly but surely I am becoming a fan of Tapas. I have come to learn though that there is good Tapas and that there is not so good Tapas. Good Tapas is fresh and tastes delicious... not so good Tapas is the type that you buy frozen in a supermarket and heat in an oven for 20 minutes.. sadly a favourite in some restaurants. I'm pleased to say though that Mañana was a fine example of good Tapas.

Mañana was busy, even for a Sunday night. It seems to be a real favourite amongst Gothenburg citizens, and rightly so. I have tried to come here a number of times before but it has always been booked up in advance.

The food tasted very nice and was well presented and at the same time the service was attentive and polite. The restaurant was modern and spacious and the bar served a good array of cocktails.  The menu was easy to choose from and the vegetarian, fish and meat dishes were all clearly separated which made my task of choosing food a lot easier.
A very enjoyable evening, eating out on a Sunday evening is definitely underrated.
